Register Today: Seminar on How Institutions Foster Cultures of Inclusive Excellence

May 16, 2024

I invite you to join me for our Scientific Workforce Diversity Seminar Series (SWDSS) event, “How Are Institutions Transformed to Foster Cultures of Inclusive Excellence?” on Thursday, June 20, from 1:00–2:30 p.m. ET. Registration is now open for this virtual seminar, which will feature four speakers with expertise in advancing institutional change to support equity and inclusion.

A scientific enterprise that embraces individuals with diverse perspectives and experiences produces more innovative and impactful research. To fully realize the benefits of a diverse scientific workforce, institutions must cultivate environments that champion the belonging, engagement, and success of all scientists. Evidence underscores that inclusive institutions enable researchers to reach their full potential and advance scientific knowledge and discovery.

In this seminar, we will discuss evidence-informed strategies that enhance inclusive excellence, examine challenges institutions may encounter as they build their capacity for inclusion, and explore methods for assessing institutional culture change. Attendees will gain insights into principles of sustainable, inclusive practices applicable across biomedical, social, and behavioral research domains.

The following subject matter experts will participate in a panel discussion and question-and-answer session:

  • Alison Gammie, Ph.D., Director of the Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity, NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences

  • Lea Vacca Michel, Ph.D., Professor, School of Chemistry and Materials Science, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives for the College of Science, Rochester Institute of Technology

  • Elizabeth Ofili, M.D., M.P.H., FACC, Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), Morehouse School of Medicine; Chief Medical Officer, Morehouse Choice ACO

  • Blanton S. Tolbert, Ph.D., Vice President of Science Leadership and Culture, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

This seminar is open to members of the broader scientific community and all NIH staff. I encourage you to register in advance, and I look forward to your participation as we collectively strive to foster cultures of inclusive excellence.

This seminar will conclude the 2023–2024 seminar series. I wish to thank everyone who has attended SWDSS events and helped make our third season a resounding success. We will resume the SWDSS in the fall—please join the COSWD mailing list and follow us on LinkedIn to stay informed about upcoming events.
