New to the NIH grants process? The Office of Extramural Research offers resources that help you understand the structure of NIH and how to successfully navigate the grants process.
- Support for Research Excellence (SuRE) Program (R16).
The SuRE program supports research capacity building at eligible higher education institutions by funding investigator-initiated research in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences that falls in the NIH mission areas.- SuRE Research Awards (R16, PAR-24-144) provide research grant support for all faculty investigators from eligible institutions who are not currently principal investigators of any NIH Research Project Grants.
- SuRE-First Research Awards (R16, PAR-24-145) provide research grant support for faculty investigators from eligible institutions who have not had prior independent external research grants.
- SuRE Resource Center (U24, PAR-21-227) assists SuRE-eligible institutions to build research infrastructure such as Offices of Sponsored Program (OSP), conducts outreach and training to OSP staff and faculty investigators, and tracks grantee institutions’ progress in research capacity building. Please log onto the SuRE Resource Center to register for free training and other services the Center provides.
- STrengthening Research Opportunities for NIH Grants (STRONG) (UC2, PAR-23-144).
This program supports research capacity needs assessments by eligible RLIs. The program also supports the recipient institutions to use the results of the assessments to develop action plans to meet the identified needs.
- Assessment of Climate at Institutions (ACt) (RC2, PAR-24-038).
This program solicits applications to conduct institutional climate assessments using validated survey instruments and to develop action plans for positive change in the recruitment, hiring, retention, and advancement of faculty, including those from groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research.
- Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program.
A congressionally mandated program that builds research capacity in states that historically have had low levels of NIH funding. It supports competitive basic, clinical, and translational research, faculty development, and institutional infrastructure improvements.
- Instrumentation Grant Program for Resource-Limited Institutions (RLI) (S10, PAR-23-138). This program aims to enhance research capacity and educational opportunities at RLIs by providing funds to purchase modern, scientific instrumentation for research and educational needs in basic, translational, biomedical-related, or clinical fields.
- NIH Research Enhancement Award (R15).
Supports small-scale research projects at educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the nation’s research scientists but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. There are two programs under the R15: - HBCU Portal for Acquisition and Grants.
This tool assists participants in the NIH Path to Excellence and Innovation (PEI) Pilot Program in locating and pursuing NIH contract and grant opportunities. The NIH Office of Acquisition and Logistics Management (OALM) launched the Pilot Program in response to Executive Order (EO) 13779: The White House Initiative to Promote Excellence and Innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It is a comprehensive plan to increase Historically Black Colleges and Universities' engagement with NIH.
- Research With Activities Related to Diversity (ReWARD) (R01, PAR-23122).
This program aims to enhance the breadth and geographical location of research and research-related activities supported by NIH. The program supports the health-related research of scientists who are making a significant contribution to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and who have no current NIH research project grant funding.
- Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC).
To support a cohort of early career, independent investigators from diverse backgrounds, for example individuals from underrepresented groups, in their transition from mentored postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent research-intensive faculty position. The program has two components: - Diversity R01 for New and "At-Risk" Investigators .
This NOFO solicits R01 grant applications from "new investigators" and "at-risk investigators" from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the health-related sciences (e.g., see NOT-OD-20-031, Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity), to enhance the diversity of R01-funded investigators. - Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (MIRA).
MIRA provides support for research in an investigator's laboratory that falls within the mission of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The goal of MIRA is to increase the efficiency of NIGMS funding by providing investigators with greater stability and flexibility, thereby enhancing scientific productivity and the chances for important breakthroughs. - Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH).
The Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH) program funds federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native tribes and organizations for health research, research career enhancement, and research infrastructure enhancement activities.- NARCH S06 Award Program (PAR-23-166)
- NARCH R34 Planning Grants Award Program (PAR-24-041)
- Tribal Institutional Review Board Establishment and Enhancement (TIRBEE) Program (R24, PAR-24-260).
The TIRBEE award supports federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribes, Tribal colleges and universities, Tribal health programs, and Tribal organizations to establish Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) or enhance the capacity of existing Tribal IRBs.
- National Institute on Aging (NIA)-Supported Advancing Diversity in Aging Research through Undergraduate Education (ADAR).
NIA encourages college students, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue research careers in aging through its ADAR programs.
- Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE) Program PAR-24-236 (UE5/T34) and PAR-24-235 (UE5/T32).
The purpose of the Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE) program is to fund federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribes, Tribal Colleges or Universities, Tribal health programs, or Tribal organizations (collectively termed, eligible Tribal Entities) to develop a pool of scientists to conduct research on AI/AN health and health disparities. The overall goal is to support the development of individuals who have the technical, operational, and professional skills required to conduct AI/AN health research in a culturally appropriate, ethically responsible and rigorous manner, to complete their degrees in a biomedical field, and to transition into careers in the biomedical research workforce.
- NIH Funding Programs by Career Stage
A variety of programs at NIH supporting scientific careers ranging from undergraduate students to established investigators to help them expand their scientific knowledge and experience to become independent researchers.
- Advancing Research Careers (ARC)
A structured program to enhance participation of trainees from diverse backgrounds, for example individuals from underrepresented groups (see Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity), as they transition from predoctoral research training to postdoctoral research and career development. - Leading Equity and Advancing Diversity MSTP Funding Opportunity
The LEAD Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) aims to develop a diverse pool of highly trained clinician-scientists who meet the nation’s biomedical research needs. The program supports dual-degree training programs at institutions that haven’t historically been well represented among NIGMS-funded MSTPs.
