COSWD developed and fielded the NIH COVID-19 Impact on Extramural Researchers Survey and the NIH COVID-19 Impact on Extramural Institutions Survey in October 2020. The surveys sought to assess the pandemic’s impact on the research workforce and research institutions and identify the potential implications for underrepresented groups in the scientific workforce.

More than 45,000 researchers took the extramural survey, a 19% response rate. More than 200 research leaders from top NIH-funded institutions completed the extramural institutions Survey, a 32% response rate. NIH used the survey findings to develop evidence-based actions that support researchers and institutions through targeted policies and the distribution of critical resources.

COSWD conducted the NIH Workforce COVID-19 Impact Survey in July 2020 to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the NIH workforce and identify potential implications for diverse groups in the scientific workforce. Nearly 17,000 NIH staff members (51%) responded to the survey.

The survey results provided an evidence base that helped NIH leadership understand the workplace environment during the pandemic, create return-to-work protocols, and develop strategies to address COVID-19-related inequities within the NIH workforce.
