NIH Progress in Addressing Funding Gaps

NIH developed the position of COSWD in response to recommendations from the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director in 2012 to address disadvantages in receipt of NIH R01 equivalent funding by race and ethnicity that was reported by Ginther et al. in 2011. Since that time, NIH has developed targeted outreach and broadly inclusive initiatives to address this disparity. NIH monitors progress addressing this disparity, and the COSWD, in collaboration with the Office of Extramural Research (OER), regularly reports on the data.

The latest update, with data through fiscal year 2023 (FY23), is discussed in the COSWD blog and presented in the Open Mike blogs "Prior Trends Continue in FY 2023 for Mentored Career Development Application (K) Funding Rates by Race and Ethnicity" and "Trends Generally Continue in FY 2023 for Demographic-Specific Funding Rates for Type 1 Research Project Grant and R01-Equivalent Applications."

In addition, the full versions of the most recent data reports are now available: "Mentored Career Development Application (K) Funding Rates by Race-Ethnicity FY2010-FY2023" and "Analyses of Demographic-Specific Funding Rates for Type 1 Research Project Grant and R01-Equivalent Applications."
