Our next virtual seminar, “How Do Diversity Supplements Impact Careers in Biomedical and Behavioral Research?,” will be on Thursday, November 17, from 1:30–3:00 p.m. EST. Registration is now open, and I hope you will join me for this informative and engaging discussion.
All NIH institutes and centers offer Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research—informally known as diversity supplements—to foster diversity in the scientific workforce by providing training, mentorship, and career development opportunities to individuals from diverse backgrounds. Diversity supplements enable investigators with active NIH grants to apply for additional funding to support eligible individuals along the career spectrum, from high school students to early career researchers.
The seminar will explore evidence regarding the influence of diversity supplements on individuals pursuing biomedical and behavioral research careers. Our discussion will include future directions for enhancing research on the outcomes of diversity supplements. Some of our panelists will also share their experiences as diversity supplement recipients.
Ericka Boone, Ph.D., Director of the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) Division of Biomedical Research Workforce, will begin the seminar by discussing OER’s efforts to collect data on the impact of diversity supplements.
The following speakers will then give brief presentations and participate in a question-and-answer session:
- Albert Avila, Ph.D., Scientific Diversity Officer, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, NIH
- Jamelle E. Banks, M.P.H., Senior Health Science Policy Analyst, National Institute on Aging, NIH
- Dowin Boatright, M.D., M.B.A., M.H.S.Exit Link Disclaimer, Vice Chair of Research, Department of Emergency Medicine, NYU Grossman School of Medicine
- Michelle D. Jones-London, Ph.D., Chief, Office of Programs to Enhance Neuroscience Workforce Diversity, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH
- José A. Luchsinger-Stuart, M.D., M.P.H.Exit Link Disclaimer, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, Columbia University Irving Medical Center
NIH has offered diversity supplements since 1989. They are a key resource NIH provides to enhance scientific workforce diversity. I look forward to discussing how these supplements may contribute to an individual’s research career development—and how to best capture their impact.
This event is part of the COSWD Scientific Workforce Diversity Seminar Series (SWDSS) and is open to all NIH staff and the broader scientific community. Please share this seminar announcement with your colleagues and subscribe to the COSWD mailing list to receive notifications about SWDSS activities.
