I invite you to join us for the next Scientific Workforce Diversity Seminar Series (SWDSS) event of the 2022–2023 season, “Outcomes from NASEM’s Advancing Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations Report,” on Thursday, March 30, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET.
Please register today to attend this virtual seminar, where we will highlight findings from the recently released consensus report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The report focuses on the systemic barriers to participation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) for underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and recommends approaches to address such inequities. NASEM published the report in February, and NIH is one of the report’s seven sponsors.
This seminar will feature a discussion with Gilda A. Barabino, Ph.D., Professor of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering and President, Olin College of Engineering, and Susan T. Fiske, Ph.D., Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs, Princeton University. Drs. Barabino and Fiske cochair NASEM’s interdisciplinary Committee on Advancing Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations, which developed the report.
Seminar attendees will learn about the latest evidence on racism and bias in STEMM organizations, strategies to create culture change, and recommendations for actionable, antiracist mechanisms to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
NASEM’s landmark study contributes to our collective journey to advance antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEMM through actionable, evidence-informed strategies that lead to lasting organizational change. These approaches foster cultures of inclusive excellence where individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups can thrive while contributing their creativity and innovation to STEMM disciplines.
I had the privilege of participating in some of the NASEM activities that informed the report. I spoke about NIH’s efforts to identify and address structural racism in the biomedical and behavioral research community at a 2021 NASEM summit on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in science. In 2022, I met with the report committee on behalf of NIH to discuss goals, stakeholder involvement, and how NIH may use the information the report synthesizes.
